As parts of Irelands energy transition the projected quantities of hydrogen produced will require significant improvement in electrolyser technology deployment, scale and cost in order to be a competitive solution.
The Challenge
Improvements are required in current electrolyser technologies in terms of performance, costs and over dependence on scarce metal resources.
Hydrogen offers huge potential in the future sustainable energy supply chain as a viable source of fuel to power fuel cells in electric vehicles in the expanding green transport sector and at grid scale storage, if produced by renewable intermittent resources, as proposed.
The Solution
This project will deliver a prototype low cost electrolyser capable of producing green H2, through the use of sustainable catalysts, intelligent cell design, and inexpensive materials.
This project represents a convergence of both emerging and more established concepts from the fields of synthetic chemistry, electrocatalysis, surface science and analysis, mechanical engineering, and manufacturing technology.
The prototype cell will be fabricated using modern manufacturing techniques such as 3D printing, with an emphasis on the use of cost-effective and robust materials.
